Joseph, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at McLaren Bay Region with family at his side. He was born in Bay City Michigan on September 8, 1937 to the late Edith (Wright) and Joseph Leo DeWaele Sr.. He married the former Sandra Glasspoole on March 3, 1973 in Bay City. He graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1956 and from CMU in 1974. He was a PFC in the U. S. Army, serving in Korea. He retired from Bay City Powertrain in 1991 after 31 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 18 and of the VFW. He loved traveling, visiting all seven continents and 70 countries. He drove his BMW motorcycle in 50 states as well as all of the Canadian Provinces and Mexico. He could navigate his boat in the Great Lakes before GPS. He enjoyed snowmobiling, listening to jazz, watching Tiger baseball, renovating both his Bay City and Oscoda homes, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Sandra; three children, Joseph III of Bay City, Michelle Mayhew of California, and Craig of Alaska; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Shawn Hingston; and brother-in-law, Gary Glasspoole. He was predeceased by his sister, Diane McKay Glazier, and brother, Arthur.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, March 11, 2019 at Auburn United Methodist Church, 207 S. Auburn Road, Auburn Michigan. The family will receive friends at the Hyatt Ewald Funeral Home, 700 N. Monroe St., Bay City Michigan on Sunday, March 10, 2019 from 2 - 8 PM, and at church on Monday from 10 AM until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Memorial Contributions to; American Legion Post #18, Auburn United Methodist Church or the Charity of Donor's choice.
