Roosevelt “Grandpa” Morris, Jr. (Uncle Pookie, to his family) was born in Burke County, Georgia on March 5, 1938, to the late Roosevelt Morris Sr. and Elease (Wade) Bradley. On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Roosevelt’s earthly journey was completed.
At an early age, Roosevelt accepted Christ as his personal Savior at the Mt. Tabor Church in Keysville, GA. After moving to Bay City, Michigan, he united with the Second Baptist Church of Bay City. Later in life, after moving to Birmingham, Alabama, he united with the St. John Baptist Church of Edgewater, Alabama.
Roosevelt served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1958. He met the love of his life, Bertha M. Howard, and were best friends and companions for 58 years. In Michigan, he was employed by the Defoe Ship Building Company for years, and retired in 1999 from General Motors Corporation. He enjoyed golf, bowling, coaching softball, and being with his family.
Left to cherish his memory are, his wife, Bertha; three sons, Leslie D. Morris of Huntington, NY, Gregory Morris and Chad H. Morris of Bay City, MI; three daughters, Debra (Robert) Carson of Deer Park, NY, Bernadette Holloway of New Castle, DE, and Kimberly M. Morris of Bay City, MI; three brothers, Lester Morris of Bay City, MI, Elder Jimmy (Apostle Glenda) Bradley of Hinesville, GA, and William Bradley of Augusta, GA; two sisters, Louise Kelly of Oxen Hill, MA, and Georgetta Brooks of Keysville, GA; sisters-in-law, Marie Rhoden of Heflin, Alabama, and Marva Baxter of Cleveland, OH; brothers-in-law, Alvin (Joyce) Rice of West Blocton, AL, and James (Lois) Rice of Tuscaloosa, AL; eleven grandchildren, Arturo Bowie, Wesley (Misty) Holloway, Tiffany (Haleen) Clark, Cordal D. Morris, Robert “Max” Carson, Loquecia (Brandon) Amthor, Quanisha Morris, Tianna Carson, Gregory “Bubba” Morris, Takeria Morris, and Ty Morris; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four god sons, Darryl Oakes of Flint, MI, Marcus Rhoden of Lansing, MI, Jason Rhoden of Huntsville, AL, and Brian Blount of Bay City, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mattie M. Patterson and Ethel Clark.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Second Baptist Church, 1770 W. Youngs Ditch Rd., Bay City, Michigan. Pastor Marcelle T. Smith and Rev. John Williams will officiate. Committal Service and Interment with Military Honors will follow the funeral service at 1:30 PM at Floral Gardens Cemetery.
